Questions Answers
Welcome to the G.A.B. Recall Blog

We've created this recall blog to give the public and news media current information about recall petition processing.

Please check back for updates!

Check out our webcam

For security reasons, we're unable to provide public access to the recall petition processing center.  But we have set up a webcam to give the public and the media a way to check in and see what's happening.

5Nines.com, a Madison-based technology company, is providing the feed at no cost to taxpayers.  We're working on some issues with the picture quality right now, so please bear with us.

Recall Cost Estimates

We have received a number of requests for the data behind the estimate for Representative Vos about the cost of potential recall elections.  You can find them here.

Recall Petition Scanning Update

All recall petitions for state senators have been scanned. Approximate totals for each incumbent are:

  • 3,963 pages Senator Fitzgerald.
  • 4,200 pages Senator Wanggaard
  • 5,150 pages Senator Moulton
  • 4,800 pages Senator Galloway

Workers began scanning petitions to recall Governor Walker at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 18. As of 10:45 a.m. Friday, 89,300 pages had been scanned.  The petitioners estimated there are 152,000 pages.  The scans also need to be verified.

When scanning of the Governor's petitions is complete, workers will begin scanning the Lt. Governor's petitions.  The petitioners estimated there are 140,000 pages of petitions.

At this point, we do not have an estimate of when the scanning will be completed.

Webcam viewership update

As of Friday afternoon the recall webcam has had:

  • 58,624 total views since Tuesday
  • A high of 848 viewers at 2:43 p.m. Friday
  • 7.2 terabytes of data sent total since Tuesday
  • 11.3 percent of viewers are watching the stream in HD

The Government Accountability Board is not affiliated in any way with the Twitter accounts commenting on the recall cam activities.

G.A.B. seeks extension to process recall petitions

The Board has asked for 60 days to process recall petitions, instead of the statutory 31 days.

Read the news release here.  Note, the motion contains a typo.  We are not asking for more than a total of 60 days at this point.

Weekend schedule

There will be a day shift working on Saturday.  No work Sunday.  Two shifts again Monday, and until scanning is complete.

Training this morning

G.A.B. staff at the recall center are working in another part of the room, off-camera, this morning for training.

New webcam angle

This afternoon we moved the webcam from its perch above the scanning area to a new home.

The new camera angle now shows our workers who are verifying individual petition pages.  They are currently working on the Senate recall petitions.

More information on the details of that verification process will be posted soon.

What's happening now?

As you can see on the webcam, the focus has shifted away from scanning petitions.

Staff is still working to verify the petitions scanned so far in order to provide accurate copies to the committees of Gov. Walker and Lt. Gov. Kleefisch.

Staff is also working on determining the sufficiency of the State Senate recall petitions.  For an explanation of exactly what they're doing, please read the manual they're using.

Petition update

Governor Walker's recall petitions will not be posted online today.  The G.A.B. staff is evaluating the privacy concerns of individuals who have contacted us about posting the petitions online.

WisconsinEye Interview with Kevin Kennedy

Kevin Kennedy, director and general counsel of the G.A.B., was interviewed Wednesday, February 1, 2012 by WisconsinEye regarding the public release of recall petition copies.

Just one note of clarification: During the interview Kevin Kennedy discussed recent website traffic to the petition site. The timeframe for the number of pageviews (1.14 million) and visitors (54,000) is since Friday, January 27, not since the petitions went online Tuesday evening.

Petition website statistics

For those who are curious, here are the usage numbers for the recall petition website since Friday, January 27:

Total Page Views: 2,927,623.

Total Unique Visitors: 96,596.

No new numbers on webcam viewers.

Our main website, gab.wi.gov, had 21,600 visits on Wednesday.  A normal day's total is less than 2,000.

Recall cam down temporarily

The recall center webcam went down late Monday afternoon, Feb. 27, due to a power failure.  It will be restored as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Webcam working again, moving soon

The Recall Center webcam is working again after a brief outage Monday afternoon.

Later Tuesday, we will be moving the webcam to the other side of the room to give viewers a better picture of what's happening.

In the meantime, here's a panorama of the Recall Center shot today:

Recall Cam comes to an end, center prepares to shut down

It turns out last Thursday (March 22) was the last day for the recall webcam.

Our partners at 5Nines.com, who provided the streaming video of operations at the Recall Processing Center for free, needed their server for an event on Friday. We were going to set it back up on Tuesday morning, but since operations will be winding down on Wednesday, it did not make sense to start everything back up again just to shut it down the next day. Today is the last day for temporary staff, and Wednesday will be the last day for G.A.B. staff.

Thank you to:

  • Everyone who watched the recall webcam during its two-month run and kept an eye on their government.
  • Anton Kapela at 5Nines.com, who set up the webcam and provided the service at no cost to taxpayers.
  • All the temporary staffers who worked so hard on this tedious but important project with the world looking over their shoulders.

The next step in the process is the Government Accountability Board's special meeting at 9 a.m. Friday, March 30, when the Board will decide whether the recall elections for the Governor and Lt. Governor will go forward. Their decision on the sufficiency of the recall petitions (whether there are at least 540,208 valid signatures) will be based on the work done at the Recall Processing Center.

The Board's meeting will be carried live on WisEye.com. The agenda and Board materials will be posted here the day before the meeting.
