Government Accountability Board Begins Work Today

Date:
January 10, 2008

Contacts for Elections, Ethics, Lobbying and Campaign Finance Remain the Same

Madison, WI – Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board (GAB) begins work today, after the merger of the staffs of the State Elections Board and the State Ethics Boards into a single state agency.

The GAB will oversee enforcement of state laws pertaining to campaign finance, elections, ethics and lobbying. While the new agency is organized, contact information for public inquiries remains the same.

For questions about elections, the GAB’s Elections Division can continue to be reached at the old Elections Board telephone number, 608-266-8005. For questions about ethics, lobbying and campaign finance, the GAB’s Ethics and Accountability Division can continue to be reached at the old Ethics Board telephone number, 608-266-8123.

Until agency websites are merged, information on the Internet can be found at the old addresses for the Elections Board – http://elections.wi.gov – and the Ethics Board – http://ethics.state.wi.us. The GAB will also post a temporary page at http://gab.wi.gov, which will provide access to both sites.

The public can find information on the GAB page of the old Elections Board web site about the functions of the six-member Government Accountability Board itself, including its 2008 meeting schedule, and meeting agendas and minutes.

Kevin Kennedy, legal counsel for the GAB, said the agency will announce a new web site and a physical merger of its offices in the coming months.

“There will be no interruption or reduction in services to voters, public officials, candidates, lobbyists or the general public,” Kennedy said. “The new GAB will build upon our past successes and will continue with the same high level of expertise and dedication to public service.”
