Several Wisconsin clerks recently received public records requests from Logan Churchwell of Group for Change in Houston, Texas.  Because elections in Wisconsin are highly decentralized, we have written Mr. Churchwell a letter providing some clarification on the availability of the requested information.

Many of the items Mr. Churchwell has requested are available to him through an SVRS Data Request, but some documents such as observer logs and complaints regarding incidents at polling places and suspected voter fraud are in the custody of local election officials.

Please refer to the attached letter.  For questions about voter data requests, you may contact Brian Bell, Elections Data Manager, at brian.bell@wi.gov or 608-261-2011.  For questions about responding to public records requests, please consult with your municipal attorney or corporation counsel.  The G.A.B. is unable to provide legal advice to clerks regarding public records requests.
